Amanita pantherina

Panther Cap · Panther Amanita
PalearcticNearctic
George Chernilevsky · Public domain

Close relative of the fly agaric whose tan-brown cap conceals a substantially higher concentration of ibotenic acid and muscimol — making it both more potent and more dangerous than A. muscaria.

ECOLOGY & HABITAT

Ectomycorrhizal with conifers and birch in temperate Northern Hemisphere forests.

Distribution
EuropeAsiaNorth America
TRADITIONAL USE
  • Some reports of use in Siberian shamanic traditions alongside A. muscaria
CULTURAL CONTEXT

Often mistaken for the edible Amanita rubescens (The Blusher), with sometimes serious medical consequences. Its higher ibotenic-acid load gives a more delirium-tinged experience than its red-capped cousin.
